The Totally Terrific Tomato Festival
On Sunday 4th of September, The Totally Terrific Tomato Festival makes its home at Killruddery for a fabulous celebration of all things tomato! The festival is dedicated to tomatoes and all their weird and wonderful varieties – from tiny tomberries to their big beefsteak cousins, and anything and everything in between. Tomato fans from all over the country are invited to join us for exhibitions, competitions, recipes and discussions – all in the name of this totally terrific fruit!
Featuring nearly 70 different varieties of tomato from dedicated growers, this display will be the highlight of the festival. Tomatoes of all shapes, sizes, weight and colour will be showcased – proving this fruit is so much more than the humble salad ingredient we’re all so accustomed to. Visitors are also invited to bring along their own specimens to display.
We will also be holding several contests over the day for tomato enthusiasts of all levels. Tomatoes of all classes and categories will be inspected by our panel of judges with prizes to be won. There will also be a couple of unusual contests such as heaviest tomato, weirdest tomato and best tomato-themed costume! Click through to find Class Categories and rules of entry and join in the fun on the day.
The festival will have several interesting discussions and demonstrations taking place on the day, from lessons on the history of the tomato to creative budget recipes. Speakers include festival founder Nicky Kyle, Dr. Matthew Jebb and Madeleine McKeever.
Recipe demonstrations will be given by Killruddery’s Séamus Hogan, Dearbhla Reynolds of The Cultured Club, and Denise Dunne of The Herb Garden.
You can download the programme for the day’s events, talks, demonstrations and competitions here.
Some of our friends from the Killruddery Farm Market, including The Birds & The Teas, Corleggy Cheese and Le Skinny Chef will be onsite with plenty of tasty accompaniments to all your tomato dishes. We will also have Killruddery barbecue, cakes, ice cream and lots of other treats available throughout the day.
The Totally Terrific Tomato Festival couldn’t happen without the help of Colm Warren, Nicky Kyle, Jane Powers and Fionnuala Ardee. Thank you for your support!
The Festival will be open to visitors from 11.30am on the day. There will be the great display, competitors’ exhibits, talks, demonstrations, the Farm Market and lots more tomato fun! (Normal Garden Entrance to Killruddery applies to visit the Festival, to take part in the competitions and biodiversity display click here).
