Alys Fowler’s Garden of Eden

Sun 16 Oct 2016 | 12:00 | Sunday Noontime Gardener's Talks

Alys FowlerDid you know the humble apple has its origins on the other side of the world? Alys Fowler travelled to Kazakhstan to visit the home of one of our favourite fruits, and learned of the danger the species now faces.

Kazakhstan is the birthplace of the original wild apple, making it something of a Garden of Eden in its own right, but its native fruit is now under threat. Officially classified as a vulnerable species, the wild apple is the ancestor of the very ones sitting on your kitchen table, and its genes could be the key to solving the problems of pests and disease we find in our own domestic apples.

Location: The Library
Time: 12pm
Tickets: Regular garden admission applies, free to Killruddery members
